Scratch Cup: Stephen Murray wins in play-off
The Old County Scratch Cup for 2012 took place on Saturday September 01st. It was once again sponsored by National AutoParts and it produced a home winner. Please see report below.
Stephen Murray pulled off a superb win in our scratch cup on Saturday. Stephen shot a 95 for the 1st 36 holes to lie one shot behind the leader and the holder Mark Miller. Also in the mix was Kevin Bermingham who 36 hole total of 95 included a stunning 44 in his opening round. Paul Nolan thanks to a 2nd round of 45 finished on 97 the same score as our own Karl Murphy & Tom O'Reilly. The cut fell at 100 with Gary Healy the last man to make the final 12. In the play-off round, Derek Courtney was the 1st to make a move despite being +1 for the opening 5 holes, Derek birdied 10 of the next 13 holes to finish on 145 (-17) and post a challenging total for those following behind. Owen Mitten starting at -10 looked like he would surpass Derek's total of 145 when he was -18 playing the last but Owen finished with double bogey five to slip back to -16. Frank Ryan from St.Bridget's showed some great form as he finished with a 47 and also finish on -16. Of the Old County trio, Karl Murphy was briefly in contention but two bogeys on the back nine saw him & Tom finish on -14. Kevin Bermingham could not hit the heights of his opening round and he too finished with a 51 to finish on 146. All the attention turned to the final duo, Miller was the 1st to strike and extended his lead to two shots after the 4th and the 6th, but birdie on the turn by Stephen saw him draw level. The guys were inseparable over the last few holes and both narrowly missed birdies on the 17th. Then on the 18th, Stephen thought he won it when he chipped in on the last, but Miller made no mistake and followed him in with a chip in.
A three hole play-off took place and Stephen was first to strike with a birdie on the 1st and he effectively sealed it on the 2nd when he added a 2nd birdie and Mark had a double bogey five. It was a great Result for Stephen who has endured a quiet year by his high standards. However he was rock solid today reclaiming the cup he won back in 2009.
There was other sucess stories for the club when Vera Glennon won the Ladies 0-10 prize with 115 and Christine O'Reilly was the Ladies B winner with a score of 123. Peter Fox from Tullamore won the Inter Prize with a score of 104 and Brendan McMahon from Kilbeggan was the Gents Junior winner finishing on 121. A big thanks to all who supported our scratch cup 86 players took part. Well done to our grounds team who had the course in pristine condition. The Action now switches to Glenville on Sunday for part 2 of this double header.
