Old County Pitch & Putt Club

Ladies and Gentlemen the Final of the Sean Tyre Club Fourball Matchplay took place last night. The course was looking very well in the evening sunshine with the freshly cut greens and fairways. Great to see over 30 people up supporting the finalists as the team of Stephen Murray and Karl Murphy took on Brian Gorman and Denis Grace. 

The match teed off a few minutes after 6pm and straight away Stephen and Karl went 1 up with a birdie 2 on the first.  Over the front nine there were 7 two's by Stephen and Karl to go 3 up after 9. The back 9 saw Denis and Brian play very well and hang in there and despite a 12 under par first round by Stephen and Karl it only left them just the 3 up after 18.

Onto the 2nd round and Denis and Brian had an excellent front 9 with plenty of 2's to bring the match back to all square after 27. The light was begining to fade as the teams headed into the back 9.  The match remained all square over the next few holes but a win on the 32nd hole put Stephen and Karl 1 up at a crucial time.. Fair play to Brian and Denis they hung in there with some good putts in the darkness  but a finish of 3 twos by Stephen and Karl saw them over the finish line by 2&1.

Well done to Brian and Denis on making it to the final and putting on an excellent performance against 2 of the top players in the Club. Great pitch and putt lads.

Congratulations to Stephen and Karl , Sean Tyre Club Fourball Matchplay Champions 2023. A fantastic standard of pitch and putt over the 3 nights and well deserved champions.

Ladies and Gentlemen last weekend was a Singles Stableford Competition. Storm Betty curtailed play a little on the Friday and Saturday. The results are as follows:

Gents Class 1 (+3 to -3) 18 Nett: Ken McKinlay (h/c -3)  44 points

Gents Class 2 (-4 to -9) 18 Nett: Denis Grace (h/c -5)  49 points

Gents Class 3 (-10 to -16) 18 Nett: Pat Ryan (h/c -15) 43 points (o.b.9.)

Ladies A (scr to -13) 18 Nett: Kathleen Condron (h/c -12) 43 points

Ladies B (-14 to -21) 18 Nett: Margaret Collins (h/c -18) 43 points

Congratulations to the winners and thank you to the 43 players who returned 86 cards in the competition.

Ladies and Gentlemen last night was Night 2 of our Club Fourball Matchplay which featured the quarter final and semi final matches. This is how it went:

Q/F 1: Karl Murphy and Stephen Murray won against Margaret Collins and Harry Holmes

Q/F 2: Laura Whelan and Stephen Power defeated Ann O'Shea and Kathleen Condron by  2&1

Q/F 3: Brian Gorman and Denis Grace won against Tommy Lynam and Joe Canning

Q/F 4: Kevin Bermingham and Mal Kellett defeated defending champions Agnes Redmond and Dave Redmond by 1 hole.

On to the semi finals and the results were as follows:

S/F 1: Karl Murphy and Stephen Murray continued their high standard of pitch and putt to defeat Laura Whelan and Stephen Power 4 & 3

S/F 2: Brian Gorman and Denis Grace won against Kevin Bermingham and Mal Kellett by 1 hole.

So the line up for tonights 36 hole final (Wednesday 23 August 2023 at 6pm) is:

Karl Murphy (+1) and Stephen Murray (+1) v Brian Gorman (-6) & Denis Grace (-4).

Ladies and Gentlemen tonight was the first round of the Club Sean Tyre Fourball Matchplay. The course was in pristine condition and the evening sunshine made it very pleasant for playing. The results were as follows:

Match 1: Karl Murphy and Stephen Murray put on a birdie feast to defeat Eugene Coyne and Gerry Clarges

Match 2: This was the match of the night (if there was a Match of the Day for pitch and putt Gary Lineker would be showing the highlights of this match first) as Ann O'Shea and Kathleen Condron got the better of Derek and Brendan Conway on the 2nd tie hole. Well done ladies.

Match 3: Frances Keane and Bridie Roche put on a good display but it was Laura Whelan and Stephen Power to advance to the next round.

Match 4: Tommy Lynam and Joe Canning defeated Teresa Keating and Marie Devoy.

Match 5: Brian Gorman and Denis Grace were in fine form to win against Dolores Mason and Vera Glennon.

Match 6: Kevin Bermingham and Mal Kellett got the better of Deirdre Curran and Liam Comerford.

So the quarter finals line up for Tuesday 22 August 2023 are as follows:

Q/F 4: Kevin Bermingham (0) & Mal Kellett (-6) v Agnes Redmond (-9) & Dave Redmond (-2), defending champions.

If players can arrive as early as possible (if you can start between 5.30pm and 6pm, would be great) and we will do our best to see if we can play the semi finals tomorrow night also.
