Player of the Year Final Standings
The race to become the Ladies & Gents Player of the Year began on the 24th March and concluded on the 17th September. In between we played 20 counting competitions towards the player of the year 2017. The Ladies come down to two playing in the final event, the Anniversary Trophy but unfortunately due to an accident at home Vera Glennon was unable to play. We wish Vera a speedy recovery, no doubt devastated that she couldn’t play at the weekend. The winner didn’t make it onto the Player of the Year leaderboard until week 4 when she won in the Fr Pat Trophy. From then on Pauline was very consistent picking up points in all the major club competitions. The surprising thing was Pauline not winning one of the club majors. Pauline did however win the Dublin Ladies Intermediate Matchplay to cap off a fantastic season for her. Pauline is winning the Player of the Year of the 2nd time after her maiden win in 2015. The Gents looked like it could have gone to anyone of 4 players but as it turned out, only two of them played over the weekend. The two men in front Mal Kellett and Ross O’Reilly just needed to pick up a prize to win but Ross didn’t played so that left the stage clear for Mal. Karl Murphy in 3rd place tried hard to catch at the top two playing 4 rounds on Friday before jetting off to his Mexican buffet unfortunately his scores were not good enough to pick up a prize. Mal on other hand set the early pace shooting 89 with his first two rounds and this score just about proved good enough to win the 36 nett in the inter gents. This win gives Mal his first Player of the Year trophy and for the first time in 9 years, the player of the year has not gone to a senior player. Mal has been very consistent throughout the season, winning the Junior club strokeplay and progressing to the Inter grade where he was able to keep his winning run going. We have two very deserving winners and yet again another tremendous end to the Player of the Year.
